Passive House – Modern “Socrates’ Megaron”
Wooden structure (mainly balloon frame + beams & columns to the South), wooden finishes.
Plan shape is based on “Socrates’ Megaron” and old vernacular houses. The house opens towards the southern sight (a wonderful forest view), making full use of the solar light and heat during winter, while the long terrace and louvers protect the interior from the hot summer Sun.
The house narrows towards the Northern cold side, where stairs and storage spaces offer protection for the main living areas. To this same side there’s also a small hill which acts as a barrier for the cold N-E winds.
The main entrance wall is a Trombe wall (a massive wall separated from the outdoors by glazing and an air space, which absorbs solar energy and releases it selectively towards the interior at night) which uses heat from the winter Sun. During summer time, the wall remains cold, due to the protecting terrace above it.
