Ramnicu Sarat Prison Memorial – First Place
The contest was organised by IICCMER, the “Institute for the Investigation of Communist Crimes and the Memory of the Romanian Exile”. Its objectives were the restoration of the old communist prison for political dissidents in Ramnicu Sarat and the proposition of a memorial to its many victims. The jury consisted of five persons: univ. prof. Dr. Andrei Pleșu (jury president), univ. prof. Dr. Mircea Ochinciuc; univ. prof. Dr. Augustin Ioan; univ. lect. Dr. Ana-Maria Goilav-Guran; dr. Mihail Neamţu. This fall, the awarded teams should join to create a final project which is going to be realised.
Prison hall proposition – real morse code messages on the floors, remembering the only way of communication among prisoners. They used to send messages by stepping on the hall floor, by coughing or by knocking on walls.
Second yard – political prisoners’ memorial, featuring Ion Mihalache as a central figure.
The dark underground cells – place of punishment and torture – serve now as exhibition panels – the walls of victimizers. Adjacent to this, our proposition features an underground chapel.
Ascending with angels… Jacob’s ladder metaphor.
On top of the chapel – an untouchable garden (paradise).
